Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a final read-through?
A: A final read-through is an affordable proofreading option that catches the inevitable errors that were overlooked during writing and editing. The final  read-through focuses on homonyms, misspellings, and missing or repeated words.

Q: Do I really need a proofreader?
A: Yes. It is nearly impossible to proofread your own writing because you automatically see what you intended to write rather than what is really there. A proofreader brings fresh eyes to your work to catch overlooked errors.

Q: But do I really need to pay for a PROFESSIONAL proofreader? Can't I just have a friend or my mom look over my manuscript?
A: If you have a friend or family member with an eye for errors who can proofread your manuscript for free, great! Just don't let them see it until you're sure you have the final version. Otherwise, on subsequent readings, they will be familiar with the material and will likely see what you meant to write rather than what is there. And if you decide that you do need a professional proofreader after all, I'm here to help.

Q: What does a final read-through include?
A: The read-through includes a thorough proofread of your final manuscript in digital format with corrections/suggestions returned to you by email. For quilt and craft patterns, I also check your calculations for accuracy.

Q: Who will actually proofread my manuscript? Is my work safe?
A: I personally examine every word of your finalized book or pattern manuscript. Your work will not be shared or seen by anyone else while in my possession.

Q: What digital formats do you accept?
A: Ideally, I'd like to see your book or pattern in its final format (usually PDF), just as your reading audience will view it. I can work with Word documents, as well.

Q: When are you available?
A: I am available most of the time and usually answer emails within 24 hours. I do travel a few days each month and three weeks each summer, however, and am not available during those times. Also, we live in a remote wilderness canyon and may lose power and/or internet connection due to weather or other factors beyond my control.

If you have not heard from me within 24 hours, please resend your message in case it was lost in transit. If you still don't hear from me, you may assume that I am away from home or temporarily offline and that I will contact you as soon as I am able.

Q: What is your expected turnaround time?
A: Most projects are completed within a few days. If you have an urgent deadline, please let me know.

Q: The next lowest proofreading price I found online is $3.25/page. Why are you so cheap?
A: First, I enjoy proofreading and am thrilled to have found an outlet for my over-pickiness. Second, I thought about pricing from an author perspective and considered what would seem fair and doable for me were I looking to have a finished book or pattern proofread. Third, I timed myself proofreading various types of material and arrived at pricing that provides a fair exchange for my time. Fourth, I cringe every time I spot a typo or other mistake in a published book or pattern and want to provide an affordable proofread for authors and pattern designers who might otherwise be unable to afford the services of a professional proofreader.

Q: I found an error in an book that you proofread. Why?
A: After proofreading the manuscript, I send the author a detailed list of edits and suggestions. The author retains total control over the manuscript at all times and has the final say over which changes are made. There are many reasons an author may choose not to make suggested corrections, especially if the errors are minor.

That being said, I am human and may have missed something. If you find an error in an book or pattern that you know I proofread, please let me know!

Q: Isn't "ebook" supposed to have a hyphen?
A: It looks a little funny without one, doesn't it? I actually prefer eBook, which comes with its own set of problems. So, despite the fact that my spell checker has a fit, I've opted for ebook with no hyphen. I'm confident that the non-hyphenated spelling will become the standard, as it has with email.

Q: What if I'm not happy with your service?
A: My goal is your complete satisfaction. In the unlikely event that you are ever dissatisfied with my proofreading service, please contact me immediately.

Q: Will you proofread my website?
A: Sure! I'd be happy to proofread your website.

Q: What if I have a question that is not answered here?
A: Please fill out the contact form or email me. I'll respond to you by email and also add your question and the answer here on the FAQ page, if appropriate.
